What is the Georgie Badiel Foundation (GBF) Women Engineering Program?
The Georgie Badiel Foundation Women Engineering Program is a groundbreaking initiative designed to empower women in Burkina Faso by equipping them with technical skills in well restoration, water system maintenance, and sustainable engineering.
The Problem
The Water Crisis in Burkina Faso – Key Problems
5,769 broken wells leave many communities without clean water.
63% of the rural population lacks safe drinking water.
Women and girls spend 200 million hours fetching water daily (UNICEF), losing time for education and work.
Unsafe water sources lead to disease, malnutrition, and child mortality.
Long walks for water expose women and girls to harassment and danger.
Climate change worsens droughts, reducing water availability.
Lack of local repair expertise keeps wells broken for years.
Urgent action is needed to restore wells and empower women-led solutions for sustainable clean water access.
Program Goals & Impact:
Skills Training & Certification: Women receive hands-on education in water infrastructure development, including well drilling, pump repair, and water sanitation technologies.
Economic Empowerment: Participants earn sustainable income while restoring and maintaining wells, providing clean water to their communities.
Community Leadership: Graduates become water champions, leading local efforts in clean water accessibility and inspiring future generations.
Breaking Barriers: The program challenges traditional gender roles, proving that women can thrive in engineering and technical fields.
Since its launch, the Women Engineering Program has trained 278 women and contributed to the restoration of hundreds of wells, directly impacting the lives of thousands in Burkina Faso.
This program is not just about clean water—it’s about creating lasting change by giving women the tools to build, lead, and transform their communities.

Three-Step Training Process
-
Classroom training covers water sanitation, hygiene, well construction, contamination prevention, and community resilience… Courses are taught in Mooré, the primary language in intervention areas.
-
Women gain on-site experience in well diagnosis, repair, monitoring, and data collection, working alongside experienced engineers and pump technicians.
-
Graduates become GBF Agents, responsible for basic well maintenance and community water education. Top-performing trainees advance to Supervisors, overseeing multiple well sites with direct reporting to GBF Headquarters.
Impact & Innovation
278+ women trained and deployed as GBF Agents.
Sustainable well maintenance across Tanghin Dassouri, Komsilga, Pabre, and Komki-Ipala.
Real-time water monitoring – GBF is developing a mobile app to track well status, improve monitoring, evaluation, and reporting (MERL), and ensure rapid response.
This pioneering program proves that women are at the forefront of solving the water crisis, transforming both their communities and their own futures.
